Trying to find arrival in the UK
Hi,
Ive spent the past few hours trying, unsuccessfully, to find the arrival in the UK of a Sextus Gisbert Van Os. I have him on the 1901 census in Fulham, London calling himself just Gisbert with wife Adele and two sons, Herbert & Mark. On the 1911 census, he is still in Fulham with his wife and two more children, Ella & Jack. The 1911 says that Sextus & Adele have been married 13 years. Sextus was born 1865c in the Netherlands and Adele 1877 in Germany; both Dutch subjects. I cannot find a marriage for them in the UK but all four of their children were born in Fulham. I would really appreciate a second pair of eyes on trying to find this couple arriving in the UK if anyone has the time Many thanks in advance

If they came from the Netherlands or Germany then it is unlikely there will be a record of their arrival in the UK, sorry.

And you probably know this already, but the Dutch spelling of his middle name seems to be Gijsbert or Gijsbertus.

I have seen the photo, I found it really impressive. This is my work colleague's family that I am trying to help him with. He thinks it was his father's cousin who took that photo.
The Gijsbertus spelling would make sense as Sextus left a will and his middle name was spelt almost the same as that on the probate index. Colleague thinks that Adele's maiden name was Hauptfleisch but that hasnt helped me at all find a marriage that probably took place in Holland.

There are some Dutch BMDs on the FamilySearch Record Search pilot site which haven't been indexed yet but you can browse the images:

There are no passenger lists for nearby countries as far as I know, but Ancestry does have a database of Alien Arrivals, 1810-1811, 1826-1869 which does include people from nearby countries, although it's a bit hit and miss what you find, and they don't give much information.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1587 I can't see Sextus, but there is an S Os, merchant, arriving from Holland in 1855, who I suppose might be related to him (no idea if it's a common Dutch name). |
