Default Potters

Hi I'm tracing my family of POTTERS on my dad's side of the family. My father NORMAN CHARLES POTTER b. 1920 was born in PENZANCE in the far West of Cornwall. I've been tracing his family history and so far I've got back to my 7th great granddad and I've hit a brick wall, my information is as follows.

CHARLES EDWARD POTTER B.1675/1684 IN KIDDERMINSTER he married HANNAH DYSON IN 1697 in ST PETERS BOLTON, LANCASHIRE, he had 9 children they are as follows:

EDWARD B. 1703, HANNAH B. 1703 I believe these are twins, HANNAH D. 5TH NOVEMBER 1703, PHEBEE B 1708, HANNAH B 1710, HANNAH B 171, HANNAH B. 1711, ELIZABETH B 1711, ANNE B 1712, ISABELL B, 1713, BENJAMIN B 1716, all born in KIDDERMINSTER.

What I would like to find out is who the parents of CHARLES EDWARD POTTER AND HANNAH DYSON are.

I would be very grateful for any help as I cannot get up to the big libraries given where I live.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the forum, Cornwalllass. I would like to know how you know that the 1697 marriage is the right one? According to Lancs OPC, both Edward Potter and Hannah Dyson were living in Bolton when they got married, and it does not show Charles as part of the groom's name. Edward and Hannah Potter then have the following children baptised in Bolton: Hanna 1698, David 1700, Edward 1702, James 1705, John 1707, Hannah 1708, Martha 1711. So they can't be the same couple who were having children in Kidderminster at the same time.

Have you found evidence in every generation to confirm that you have followed the right lines back to get to the early 18th century? Sometimes it is tempting to assume that someone else's tree is correct and just copy it, but you should not do that - you should always check everything thoroughly at every step and get copies of certificates, etc. I suppose what I am trying to say is that we could help you try to trace your Charles Edward Potter back but we would want to know whether he is definitely your ancestor or if you need help checking the later generations first.

For what it's worth, I did trace back from Norman Charles Potter whilst I was cooking dinner and didn't write down any of the first part. However, from what I remember..... (dates approx) All b Penzance area down as far as John:

Cornwalllass
Norman Charles b 1920 (father)
Wilfred Norman b 1894 (grandfather)
Edwin C b 1860 (great-grandfather)
Frederick b 1832 (2xg-grandfather)
John b 1793 in Kidderminster (3xg-grandfather)
John was bap 16 Aug 1793 in Kidderminster parents Richard and Mary (4xg-grandparents) (only seen transcription on FMP)

Here is John and his wife in 1851:

https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bi...2707c89f87e10d

So, I've not identified a marriage for Richard or a baptism for him yet.

This might be his burial:

Richard Potter b abt 1760 Burial 25 Mar 1824 Kidderminster

There is a bap in Kidderminster that fits well:

Richard Potter bap 22 Feb 1760 son of John and Elizabeth (so poss 5xg). However, it's not the only one in Worcestershire around that date. Plus I think the borders with Shropshire and Staffs are very near Kidderminster.

Anyway, if you can confirm if this is your line and how you reached Edward and Hannah going back from John, that would be really helpful.
