Husband's gt grandfather. Although censuses give a variety of London birthplaces, I do have his birth cert!
Birth 1866 Charles Albert McCarthy 13 Jan 1866, 5 Wellington Place, Southwark, London. Parents: Dennis McCarthy, journeyman cooper, & Elizabeth Alice McCarthy, formerly Goodwin. Between 1866 and 1871 the family name changed from McCarthy to Carter, although some family members kept the McCarthy surname. Informant: Charles Albert Carter, father, 1 Pakenham Street, St. Pancras. 1915 listed as publican, Pakenham Arms, in London Post Office Directory 1916 writes letter concerning his son Henry's enlistment in the Army: "Dear Sir, As I have three sons int he Army I do not think it right that a boy of 16 should go, I have put £2,000 in the War Loan and if I could get a man to manage my business I would join up myself. I am yours faithfully, C.A. Carter". 1923 still licensed victualler at 1 Pakenham Street 1936 Charles made an unsuccessful attempt to get his birth certificate from the GRO. They couldn't find it because they were looking for Charles Carter and he was registered as McCarthy! during WW2, Charles and wife and some of their children and grandchildren moved to Ruislip in Middlesex to escape the blitz. 26 Jan 1944, death of wife Caroline Sarah Carter, aged 77, wife of Charles Albert Carter, retired licensed victualler, at 7 Westfield Way, Ruislip, Uxbridge, Middlesex. Caroline is buried in Northwood Cemetery, Middlesex. death 27 Nov 1949 Charles Albert Carter, aged 83, retired licensed victualler, of myocardial degeneration, oedema of legs, senile debility, at 117 Dalyell Road, Lambeth [South London]. Family legend is that Charles overdid it by trying to chop down a tree as he didn't want to pay for someone else to do it! Burial 1949, Streatham Park Cemetery
