In thirty odd years, I have never established who Charles' mother was. There are two marriages in the 1760s - which seem too early - and one in 1790, apparently too late: Thomas Pierce who marries Mary Ede, a blacksmith at Lindfield.
In 1851, a Philip Pierce b c 1803 is living at Picknowle, Cowfold, with his father Thomas aged 80, so born c 1771. Extracts of manorial documents online make it clear that there were two Picknowles: https://archive.org/stream/sussexarc...e/170/mode/2up and that they were clearly being rented out to tenants. Is this Thomas Charles' father? (family search notes some Cowfold burials, but doesn't give age at burial) His brother? A cousin? I'm not sure this advances the search, but I present it in case anyone else has suggestions. I thought manorial records might be a way forward, but Charles' son (another Thomas) was clearly a tenant farmer on short leases or annual rental as he is forever moving.

FamilySearch lists the following baptisms at Cowfold with parents Thomas Pierce and Mary:
Elisabeth 13 Jul 1762 Elisabeth 13 Jul 1763 Ann 16 Jun 1765 Ann 28 Jun 1765 Ann 11 Oct 1766 James 25 Mar 1768 Jane 15 Sep 1776 Mary 10 Dec 1779 Kitty 5 Jun 1781 Stephen 30 May 1784 Charles 7 Aug 1788 Charles 17 Aug 1788 Mary 10 Nov 1790 Sarah 5 Feb 1792 Edward 6 Jan 1793 Presumably the two Charles entries are both the same person with one mistranscribed, and likely the same for the two Elisabeths and two of the Anns. I can't see Philip's baptism listed.

On the 1851 census Philip's birthplace is Ashurst and there is a Joseph Pierce on the previous page age 48 also born Ashurst. Philip's age is 50 so he would be born about 1800-1 and Joseph about 1802-3. There are a couple of public trees on ancestry showing Philip's mother as Ann but not much info there.
On the 1841 census Thomas has Philip with him, then on the next page there is a James Pierce age 55, "yeoman". Hmm, there do seem to have been a lot of Pierces around.

The witnesses were Eliz Pierce and PHILIP Baker There is a baptism of Mary Baker, d of Philip Baker in Cowfold. 4 August (or 11 August!) 1766 Thomas Pierce m Mary Dench in Cowfold 30 April 1790 Thomas Pierce m Mary Ede Cowfold Cowfold: Settlement examination: Thomas PIERCE Par/59/32/4 23 Sep 1790 Contents: Subject: Thomas PIERCE, blacksmith; married: Mary PIERCE(nee EDE; Lindfield, Cuckfield. Born in Lindfield, where father settled. In 1779 bound apprentice to Thomas LEOPARD blacksmith of Cuckfield, served for 7 yrs. Other: Mary EDE, wife Other: Thomas LEOPARD, master Poor Law Record Reference Number: Par/59/32/3 Parish: Cowfold Order type: Removal order Date: 7 Jan 1795 Subject Thomas PIERCE married Ashurst Spouse Mary PIERCE I assume that this Thomas and Mary are being removed to Ashurst. Which must mean he has done something to gain settlement there. No children are mentioned, so is this an elderly, rather than a young couple? Or is this them: Thomas Pierce to Mary Churcher on 23 June 1794 at Washington (a fourth couple!)

I've just found this on a Rootschat thread:
Ashurst baptised to Thomas and Mary Pearce Thomas 19 July 1795 Phillip 28 May 1799 Joseph 7 March 1803 Elizabeth 9 December 1804 Harriott 11 October 1807 They also had a daughter Jane in 1801. It would be tidiest if they were the children of Mary Churcher.

This (fifth!) marriage looks more promising:
Mary Ashfold England Marriages, 1538–1973 marriage: 30 June 1776 Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, England spouse: Thos. Pierce It would fit neatly with Jane as eldest child.

I reckon that you have one (or two!) families in the 1760s, a run from 1776 and possibly a third (or fourth!) family in the 1790s.
