I remember reading in my local newspaper in 1976 that my local county council had waved goodbye to the last set of orphans they were sending to the colonies as they thought children could do just as well in the UK. I wondered why, in that case, they had waved goodbye!
Yet another disgraceful shameful episode in British social history. OC |

Problem was that at the time the authorities/charities thought they would have a better life than if hey stayed in Uk.
I was nearly one of them as the orphanage i was in sent children to the Commonwealth

JBee, it wasn t about a better life for the children, it was mostly a money saving exercise and the colonies' needs to populate. It did turn out to be a wonderful opportunity for some, but no one cared whether it was or it wasn't and the lies are unforgivable.

Telling children their mothers had died and vice versa was absolutely unforgivable.

One of the worst offenders in the field was Dr Barnado, who took children off the street if he thought they looked neglected. He, and his henchmen did sometimes ask for parental permission - one mother apparently gladly gave it because she thought they were going on a day trip to the seaside.

A lad living here in Croydon was orphaned in WW2 when his wealthy parents died in a bombing raid. He was living comfortably with a nurse. Our council became his guardian, secured his assets, got rid of the nurse and sent him to Canada, where he lived miserably as a farm servant.

Libby, yes indeed, was a nightmare for most of the children.
