I'm confused, Rosie. Does the baptism give the names of Frederick's parents as William and Ann? If so, are you saying you're not sure it is the right baptism for your Frederick Henry Foster?

sorry Kate, of course it does!
So, parents are Wm and Ann but can I be sure that Ann is Ann Doughty? |

Frederick has a widowed sister-in-law Hannah Doughty with him on the 1881 census, so I would say so. On the 1871 census Hannah is the wife of William Doughty who was born about 1817-1818 at Grantham, Lincolnshire (or Spittle Gate, Lincolnshire, according to the 1861 census), so I suspect that William was Frederick's half-brother. There is a baptism for a William Doughty at Grantham in 1817 with parents William and Ann.
I can't remember - does the William Foster / Ann Doughty marriage say whether Ann was a spinster or a widow? |

I've got my paper work out. I'd written about Hannah Doughty s-i-l 1881. Couldn't work out HOW she was his s-i-l but like your suggestion.
The marriage doesn't mentionmarital status I'm afraid: "William Foster of this parish and Ann Douhgty of this parish were married in this church by banns" etc. Witnesses werer Henry Foster and (possibly) Mary (it looks like Sherg lol) Wills/wiles/mills/miles (her mark). Everyone else signed their names. |

I see there is an extracted record on the igi for William Doughty (Fred's harlf brother) baptism 15 OCT 1817 Grantham, Lincoln, England Parents Wm Doughty and Ann.
hmmm. In Lincs and Notts for 1807 - 1827 there are 2 Wm Doughty marriages to Anns. 28 NOV 1816 Newark to Ann Singleton and 15 FEB 1820 Farnsfield, to Anne Esam. I could look at both of these in Newark library. |

There is a James Truswell Doughty baptised at Farnsfield in 1829, parents William and Ann, so I would think Ann Singleton is more likely to be your Ann, but yes, worth looking at both.
