In the paper today there's a young woman whose mother didn't register her birth and she's having a terrible time trying to prove she was born in the UK.

If there was an easy way, I'm sure a lot of fraudsters would take advantage of it.

Makes you wonder just how much searching was done? So many people who use multiple surnames and if her birth forename and/or place of birth isn't what was expected (never mind the exact date) then I can see it would be very easy for her registration to be missed. It makes me feel even more doubtful when she says she doesn't think either of her siblings were registered either.
Of course when she says, "If I died I would be untraceable" isn't entirely true either.

Her parents must have never claimed child benefit (if it's true) - a lot of money lost over the years.

Very good point. Seems unlikely.

Um, so how does she know she was born in Britain then? Wouldn't DNA testing between her and her aunt prove kinship and therefore the right to be British?

I think the 'fact' that she says her siblings are also not registered probably means they all are, but that she doesn't know some info that would help her, or anyone else, find them. I can't believe the family went without child benefit without being bothered.

My mother was never registered. Her brother was, but the cert is a load of lies except his Christian name and place and date of birth. Parents name, marriage, other siblings names, etc all lies……..lol

Thing is, if your birth goes unregistered in the UK you cannot receive child benefit and that means (or meant) you wouldn't receive any other kind of benefit either. You wouldn't be on any administrative lists, such as school enrolment etc. This young woman is surely registered with a GP - how far back do those medical records go, I wonder and under what names etc. I vividly remember a search on another site, a man whose birth had never been registered. He grew up in the UK. The GRO failed to find a registration so that was the end of that. An amateur researcher found his birth registration almost immediately - he was born in Jersey during the war, came to the UK with his mother, she died and he went into a Home. The carelessness and indifference of many officials meant he was effectively a non- person in the UK for all his adult life. OC |
