Sally, my mother's father's mother was from Cowling.
This below is from the Craven Indexes. I purchased her download and have found it well worth the price. Indexed By: Mrs Josie Walsh Web: http://www.cravenindexes.co.uk General Enquiries: [email protected] She covers a lot of area: Carleton, Cowling, Kildwick, Long Preston, Lothersdale, Silsden, Skipton, Steeton, Sutton-in-Craven. All the following are from KILDWICK ST ANDREWS. The marriage you already have a date for was also in that same church. I'm sure you know that in those early days Cowling was part of the parish of Kildwick, its own church not having been built until 1844 according to the Cowling Moonrakers web site, which I've found very informative: http://www.moon-rakers.co.uk/oldsite...evelopment.htm BAPTISMS 1795-1801 I could not find a baptism for your James Hindle, hope I didn't just miss it; but since I was there I copied out these which include some of James and Rebecca's children in case they are useful: HINDLE Grace 1st daug of James & Rebecca Hopkinson of Cowling a Weaver, Born 17.3.1785 bapt 24.9.1797 HINDLE James 3rd son of James & Rebecca Hopkinson of Cowling a Weaver, Born 19.11.1791 bapt 24.9.1797 HINDLE John 1st son of James Rebecca Hopkinson of Cowling a Weaver, Born 16.12.1781 bapt 24.9.1797 HINDLE Joseph 2nd son of James & Rebecca Hopkinson of Cowling a Weaver, Born 1.5.1785 bapt 24.9.1797 HINDLE Martha daug of John & Ann of Steeton a Husbandman, Born 26.4.1795 bapt 12.7.1795 HINDLE Sarah daug of John & ??????? of Eastburn a Labourer, Born 00.00.0000 bapt 28.12.1800 HINDLE William 5th son of Thomas & Jane Hallam of Steeton a Husbandman, Born 14.8.1797 bapt 17.9.1797 There are burials listed here for James and Rebecca, also John and Mercy. BURIALS 1792-1801 11.5.1792 HINDLE John of Cowling a Husbandman BURIALS 1802-1812 5.2.1803 HINDLE Brian son of Benjamin & Isabel of Steeton a Weaver 19.7.1805 HINDLE Isabel wife of Benjamin of Steeton a Weaver aged 23yrs 17.12.1811 HINDLE John of Steeton a Labourer aged 65yrs 31.12.1812 HINDLE John son of John & Anne of Steeton a Weaver 2.7.1804 HINDLE Joseph son of Benjamin & Isabel of Steeton a Weaver 4.8.1807 HINDLE Joseph son of Thomas & Jane of Steeton a Husbandman aged 14yrs 5.5.1807 HINDLE Mercy relict of John of Cowling a Husbandman aged 76yrs 10.4.1806 HINDLE Sarah daug of John & Ann of Steeton a Husbandman aged 19yrs 2.2.1808 HINDLE Thomas of Cowling a Weaver aged 26yrs BURIALS 1813-1817 HINDLE ELIZABETH COWLING 15.8.1817 3YRS BURIALS 1830-1834 HINDLE JAMES COWLING 6.6.1830 71YRS HINDLE JANE STEETON 25.1.1833 78YRS HINDLE LEVI STEETON 3.4.1831 13YRS HINDLE PRISCILLA EASTBURN 22.2.1832 23YRS HINDLE SARAH COWLING 1.6.1830 38YRS HINDLE SARAH STEETON 27.10.1833 26YRS BURIALS 1834-1850 HINDLE ANN STEETON 7.4.1837 87YRS HINDLE ANNE LOTHERSDALE 11.1.1837 49YRS HINDLE JAMES COWLING 3.10.1834 42YRS HINDLE JOHN STnEETON 20.4.1842 37YRS HINDLE JOHN STEETON 4.2.1849 70YRS HINDLE MARTHA EASTBURN 22.12.1846 63YRS HINDLE MARY STEETON 18.1.1844 72YRS HINDLE REBECCA UTLEY 15.2.1842 90YRS HINDLE SARAH ANN EASTBURN 19.6.1843 1YR HINDLE THOMAS DUNNINGTON 3.4.1845 66YRS I also noticed she gives some references for Hindles in the 1891 and 1901 censuses which is much later than this thread is concerned with. Oh WOW Janet..........thank you so very much for all that. It will keep me occupied for a while!! I will check out that site because although I have discovered loads of fascinating history about Cowling there is always something new, and it seems like a wealth of information.
A million thank yous again for all your time and trouble - I have the relevant census records for descendants in my tree; they moved over to the Leeds area. Babs, it is a different Cowling to yours, bad luck!

Most happy to oblige, Sally!
![]() There were lots more Hindles that I didn't copy out for you because my eyes were already crossing, so you might want to get that download. BTW, you do know it's pronounced COAL-ing...? No "cow" in Cowling! I learnt that from the web site. Sorry we're not cousins yet, Babs! |

I just re-read your earlier post, Sally, and realized you said you already had a lot of good information on Cowling. Anything I should know to look at?
Did all your people move to Leeds, then? These probably have nothing to do with you, but since I found them the other night I'll just put them out there. You may ignore them at will. ![]() Skipton 1891 Census Hindle ED 06 Folio 59 Hindle ED 11 Folio 9 Skipton 1901 Census – incl Workhouse Hindle ED 08 Folio 64 SKIPTON - 1901 CENSUS – Workhouse Hindle Folio 118 |

Sally, I have Hindles too. Mine were at Church Kirk, not too far way.
However, I think Hindle is a fairly common name in the neighbourhood. http://genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum...ad.php?t=10330 |

Janel, I have been pronouncing it wrong for a few years now........thank you for putting me right! Much of my information came from a contact in Tasmania whose line merges with mine a few generations back, plus of course trawling the internet. I will compare your site with his information and if there is new stuff for you I will happily send it by email.
I have no connections so far with Skipton, my lot seemed to go straight to Bramley and surrounding area and stayed there from what I could see, but I will go back and check dates and things just in case. Hi Elizabeth, yes I think that it was quite common but you never know. Did your lot go East by any chance?!

Hi Sally,
I just thought that if any of your people were left behind in Cowling they would have been counted on those censuses in Skipton, I believe, which is the Civil Registration District for Cowling. You might like to play around with this interactive map that someone pointed out in another thread. I found it quite useful. The most fun I had was when I clicked on Layers. I probably have lots more to discover. It's quite clever. http://maps.familysearch.org/ |
