Default Our DNA Origins

I've just heard a brilliant talk on this by Hilary Hartigan. (If anyone belongs to ESFHS, it's being repeated tonight at 8pm)

She explained very clearly how it would be years before what used to be called ethnicity might be helpful for me, how the apparently different ethnicity results from different companies are not necessarily contradictory, and why results become problematic more than five generations back.

Most DNA speakers get bogged down with complicated diagrams. She pointed out why results might not be what we expect, without being moralising or judgmental about her audience's thoughts.

If you get a chance to listen to her, do!

That sounds quite interesting, Phoenix. It doesn't appear you have to be a member, but just give a name and email address, with the caveat that "Information you provide when registering will be shared with the account owner and host and can be used and shared by them in accordance with their Terms and Privacy Policy." Is this it?

I've registered. Thanks!

My pleasure, Janet!

I got far more out of the talk because it was clear and simple. And Hilary did illustrate why I have no longer got any Irish DNA, despite my great granny Riley: her father and grandfather were both born in England, so their English wives diluted my Irishness to insignificance.

Missed it unfortunately.

I find it all confusing - I want to find family of my great grandmother who said she was from Co Fermanagh in 1901 census but so many matches on son's dna don't have any trees so working out who might be that connection is impossible.

So far most of OH's and son's dna connections are the lines we know but don't take us any further.

Have you taken a DNA test yourself, Julie?

Yes - but haven't got results yet. Took advantage of the cheap offer Glen gave us.

Well, it should be easier when you have your own DNA matches. Give us a shout if you need help when you get your results.
