Hello cousin Diane - this chap is your Catherine Tupper Harwood's 1st cousin 3x removed, and my husband's 1st cousin 7x removed, not so much a family tree as a family tangle!

Thomas left his wife 2 cows and a life interest in his house & 7 acres of land, plus all his stock in trade so she could continue the business for her own benefit and that of sons James & Edmund who were not of age. Should she remarry, all was to be sold to repay the £550 mortgage and any residue to be split between his nine children whom he lists, sons first in name order: Thomas, Edward, Henry, James & Edmund, then his daughters (no mention of their married names) : Mary, Eleanor, Elizabeth and Alice (never heard of Alice, cannot find anything even though I have looked through Sutton register on Familysearch). There had been another two daughters, Ann and Frances who must have died (an Ann Harwood was bur 1806 in Sutton)
He also made provision for Edmund to be apprenticed to a trade (he later became a cordwainer). His executors were his widow, his friends John Neal (whose father John was another of my direct ancestors) and George Tupper both yeomen of Bignor, the next village. There is also a valuation of his estate, which came to £175 17s 1d Last edited by Jill; 12-10-17 at 06:50. Reason: typo |

Researching an imminent trip to Bignor Roman Villa reveals that the George Tupper discovered it was the same George Tupper who was friend and executor of my Thomas Harwood, and that the Tupper family still own the farm.
