Interesting Gert - did her parents work in Walter Evans' mill?
Memory tells me that Lavender Row was tied housing for the mill workers. We were on the other side of the bridge - I lived the first three years of my life in the mill yard when my Dad worked at the mill in the 1950s. All round there is now a conservation area, part of a World Heritage site. AN

Thank you for your interest An,
Alice did as did Williams sister Sarah, all were cotton spinners. Both Alice and her 2 sisters and Sarah were living in Mileash Lane with Williams Grandfather in 1841, William was in the workhouse, all were orphans. I like to think thats how William and Alice met.

I got really quite excited when I was flicking down the list this morning and saw this one.
I should have some stuff about the mill somewhere and I know these guys http://www.derby.gov.uk/LeisureCultu...ial_Museum.htm have information and artefacts because I donated some of them! Just shout if there's anything I can help with. AN

Thanks for the offer An, i do have some i printed out from the "Derwent Valley Mills" site, but if you have something different i would be interested.
What i am having trouble finding is a picture of "The Institute" which i believe was on the corner of West Row and Old Lane, this was pulled down in the late 60s and 3 units built, the family story goes....that they went back there as thats where they grew up, though i have found no evidence to prove it, except for them dieing there.

Hi Sylvia
I don't have one myself, but I am exploring means by which we might get one and I'll let you know if it comes good. I've got various books and pamphlets somewhere upstairs. I'll dig them out and tell you what I've got. Back to the tennis AN

Oh that sounds interesting, i have googled and googled to find a pic, all i found was a discription "a large detached red brick and blue slate roofed building" which could mean most buildings..This was from a Rootsweb site.
