Default Thomas Christmas(s) and Grace Hiden

Thomas was bp in St Nicholas, Guildford, in 1716, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Christmas. He died there in 1749 and in the following year Grace Christmas widow married James Smither, bargeman again in St Nicholas Guildford.

It seems reasonable that Grace had been the widow of Thomas, since the only Grace/Christmas marriage I an find was

17 September 1748 of Grace Hiden to Thomas Christmas at St Katherine precinct, London - a church that appears to have been knocked down to build St Katharine's Dock.

My Anestry subscription has expired. Would SKS have a look at the marriage entry, to see if it has any further details about Thomas? I'm wondering whether Thomas was a bargeman, like his successor?

(I'm also wondering wherther Grace was actually a Hayden - variously spelled!) According to her marriage licence, she was born in 1724.

Thomas was a bachelor.
Grace Hiden was a spinster.
No further details given.

The marriage licence allegation says that Thomas was a mariner, of Guildford, aged 30, and Grace was of St Tosell (?) in Cornwall.

Oh wow.
Thanks ladies
After James died Grace was removed to Chertsey in Surrey. She was mentioned in a lecture yesterday and the speaker said how isolated she must have felt. She was obviously far more widely travelled!

Lol, OC. Phoenix was house clearing in the morning, train ride to attend a very good (apart from this aspect) lecture in the afternoon AND a zoom lecture in the evening. Couldn't sleep at two, and have now only just crawled out of bed, wondering whether I can face returning to the house (it's a half hour walk) to collect something I forgot.

I had also forgotten (correct me if I'm wrong, Elizabeth and OC) but Grace is a West Country name.

Yes, Grace is very common in the West Country.

I hope you are not too tired.

Thanks, Elizabeth, on both counts!

It's a lovely day here today, so the walk was enjoyable, I did a round trip to the supermarket and, unlike everyone else who had been waiting forever, caught a bus home almost immediately.

Forgot to say - in our family, it's Snozzle - or, when my youngest was small, Instant Ostell. She was about 10 before she could say it properly.
