Newark Advertiser Wed March 29th 1882

Spalford - On Saturday last an inquest was held by Mr W Newton, coroner, on the body of Samuel Barks, 70 years of age. On Friday morning, between nine and ten o'clock, deceased left the house and his wife, who had watched him in consequence of melancholy, went to look for him about five minutes afterwards. She found the closet door fastened and raised an alram, and on opening the door deceased was found hanging from the roof. He was immediately cut down, but life was extinct. Deceased had formerly worked on the roads under Mr Hitchin. Of late his mind has been affected and he has been under the delusion that the police were constantly after him and that he could not escape going to prison. There seemed to be nothing to warrant the delusion but its effect on the deceased mind no doubt caused him to commit the rash act. - Verdict accordingly.

Date and place of burial.

27 Mar 1882 at North Clifton, Nottinghamshire

The headlines for the Newark Advertiser that same day was the death of the poet Longfellow.

Yes, very sad. I knew it was a suicide before I sent for the death cert. Had already seen the burial in the parish register and it said suicide on that.

Depression is such a terrible illness and in many cases today, still very difficult to treat.
