There are a couple of wills on Scotland's People that you could look at:
Sim James 20/1/1886 South Street, Aberchirder, Parish of Marnoch, County of Banff, d. 06/12/1885 at Aberchirder, testate Sime James 7/12/1887 retired Farmer, Aberlour, County of Banff, d. 29/09/1887 at Aberlour, testate But of course even if one of them is the right James, he may well not have mentioned an illegitimate daughter in his will. |

Thanks, Kite, I've already looked at the first one but the associated death seems to be for a man aged 81.
I'll check out the second one. |

"Grange. June 10, 1866. Session met &c.
Compeared Isabella Richardson who confessed she had brought forth a child in fornication and named James Sim as the father thereof. She was suitably addressed and summoned to appear on the first Sunday of next month." "Grange, 1st July, 1866. Session met &c. Compeared Isabella Richardson who produced a letter from James Sim in which he acknowledged himself the father of her child. She professed penitence and was absolved." |
