The one with the dressing gown shows land behind him, but I can't think where on Ventnor esplanade that would be as there is nothing out at sea, and to either side the land rises steeply up to St Boniface Down.

I think the buildings on the hill in this Francis Frith picture of Ventnor are the same buildings as in the background of the picture with my family in the water.

I suppose it's possible not all the photos are of the same place - mum labeled them about 60 years after the event and she's never re-visted the Island. I need to find the rest of the Eastbourne photos, but I think she has them....

Merry I have asked my OH to have a look at the photos and he does not think the 1st one is on the Island.
The 2nd one he is 99% sure that it is Ventnor. He thinks it is at the left of the pier where the canoe lake and children's Island shaped paddling pool is. I agree with him now I've seen it again. The one on the beach again he is 99% sure it is Ventnor.

Thank you very much, Wendy. And please thank your OH for me too.
I will see if I can get mum talking about the dressing gown photo - if she thinks I'm asking questions she forgets everything, so I have to go carefully! Watch this space after tomorrow!!!

My great-aunt, Gertrude Leslie Sanders, nee Gosden and her husband, Archibald Percy Sanders in the late 1930s. I don't know where this was taken. Usual British beach clothing though!!!!

This is George Renyard (1887 - 1957) and his wife, Ethel nee Fursse (1892 - 1973) on the left of the photo. Most likely summer 1923. I don't know where the photo was taken, but they lived in Hackney. George is second cousin twice removed to my OH.

My Great Grandparents, Joseph and Marjorie Colwood at the beach in the 1950s.
My Great Great Grandmother, Alice Violet Connelly (formerly Arnold) on the beach in the 1920s (I think anyway). Probably at Barry. |

Went on the train to visit family in 1911 but couldn't get back to work (presumably because of the train strike?!)
