Sabrina, it might be worth looking at this (year 2 years out, though):

He is called John Souls, but it is Gloucestershire.

The father of that one is William, though (and the mother is Sarah).

I didn't realise you could use the free search on BMD Registers to tell you the parents' names other than by guessing various names till someone did it for me a few weeks ago, but I've figured out how to do it now. Go back to "standard search" and put in surname only, as it appears on the record you found, tick "yes" for Exact Match, choose Event Type Births & Baptisms, and tick to search all names. Then page through the results to find the entry you had before and it will show you the parents' names. I don't think this would work for common surnames, though.

Kiterunner, thanks for that information - I didn't know that. (Off to try it out!)

Thank you Elizabeth for that link - I had no idea that little gem of a site existed!! Thanks to KiteRunner for the search tips - it even tells you which chapel they were baptised in when you click on the 'recordset' - very useful!

His father was definitely John though (according to his marriage cert).

I have just looked at my notes again and I think I have found baptisms of his brothers and sisters in Cheltenham from 1828 onwards - parents names John and Mary SOUL, of Cheltenham, occupation: Salesman. Maybe they travelled around and he was baptised before they got to Cheltenham. Their marriage has proved just as elusive!
