These are Nora and Julia's original baptisms, C of E and under the surname Holland:

St Michael, Shoreditch, 9 Jan 1898, Nora's dob 31 Dec 1895 (presumably should be 1896), Julia's 19 Dec 1897, parents Alfred & Thirza Holland, 8 Gt Eastern Buildings, father's occupation labourer.

In 1921 Thirza is living with Julia and William at 2A Bathurst Buildings in Shoreditch. Thirza is listed as Mrs Williams, aged 50, and William is down as Willes in the transcription. I think it is actually Willie, but it is Will(blot),

They are all out of work, Thirza does washing, Julia does Polishing and William is a Carman.

Emily Holland appears in the London school records on Ancestry, being admitted to Curtain Road School, Hackney, on the 7th Sep 1891, so I was hoping that would lead to finding the family on the 1891 census but the address (13 Norfolk Gardens) is that of Thirza's sister Julia and none of the Hollands are with her on the census.

Julia and Nora school admission in 1902. Nora's dob is 11/3/1896 and Julia's is 30/11/1898.

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discovery...=successSource

And another one here, from 1901 giving different dobs and saying they left the school in 1905.

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/discovery...=successSource

This is very confusing as the 2nd link is for St Joseph's Catholic School, which is supposedly the one Thirza put them into after William Sr died in 1902. So if they entered St Joseph's in 1901 and left in 1905, why were they registered at St George Charity School in1902 (the 1st link) , and as William was named as their guardian presumably he was still alive?

I think this is William at St Josephs. The date of birth matches with the one on the 1939 register, however his mother is named as Kate.

Everything about this family is confusing! But the St Joseph's Catholic School page says they entered 1/10/01 and left 5/10/01.

This is Nora and Julia returning to St Joseph's in 1902, no dates of birth given:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...ce&pId=8867084

Their address is given as 5 Crispin St:

Oops yes, sorry so it does. That's me going all cross-eyed. Wonder if the school found out they were not baptised as Catholics?

Findmypast has the images of the Catholic baptisms - which were in 1904, so they had already been readmitted to the school ages before:

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/reco...2FPH2%2F093701

They were "sub conditione" baptisms, i.e. they were baptised in case they hadn't previously been baptised. Note that the mother's maiden name isn't filled in for them although it is for the others on the page, perhaps because the parents weren't married to each other? Or because the maiden name wasn't known to the person who filled it in?

I was also surprised by the episode and particularly her appearing without make up. I got the feeling that her mum had been told to mention her mother being in hospitals, because that seemed such a random thing to be told. It was nice that her she met her mum's cousin.
