Can anyone find Elizabeth in 1851/61 please? - Genealogists' Forum

Further to my recent thread about Elizabeth Stowell remarrying, http://genealogistsforum.co.uk/forum...ead.php?t=9218 my contact has told me today that he now has the cert & it is her.

Can anyone find her & her new husband George Brewster in 1851 for me please? She was born c1810 Cardigan Wales & we have no info on him, the cert listed both parties as being of "full age" on their marriage. George is shown as being a soldier & his address as St George's barracks. I do not know whichregiment he would have been with. They would also presumably have had Elizabeth's daughter Catherine, (born 1838 in Canada although always said Westminster on the census) with them.

I had a look for them when I read your thread, but I couldn't find them then. I'll have another try though.

Thanks Kate. I was hoping that now we know his occupation, it might be easier. It is possible that they were overseas as he is a soldier. Elizabeth was in Canada with her first husband for the 1841 census.

Oh, there is a George Brewster at District Wellington Barracks, Westminster St Margaret, in 1851. He is age 38 born Lincoln Market Rasen, but it says Unmarried. But that could be a mistake or maybe he didn't tell the army he had married? He's a Private. (Think the proper name is just Wellington Barracks, not District Wellington Barracks as ancestry shows it)

Findmypast has the army papers for the George Brewster who was born 1812 Market Rasin, Lincolnshire, so you could look at those and see if it has any mention of him marrying? Of course he could be the wrong George, but they don't list any others about the same age as Elizabeth, though there are two with ? for year of birth.

That is interesting Kate. I've been googling St George's barracks & have found one listed in Charing Cross, St martin in the Field which would presumably be where he was at the time of the marriage. He was listed then as being a bachelor.
Just noticed your 2nd post, they could be worth a look.

Who are the witnesses on the marriage, and what details are there of George's father? I'm just thinking maybe we can work out from that whether he is the George born Market Rasen or not.

On the other thread you mentioned that in 1871 and 1881 Elizabeth is listed as Stowell. Whereabouts was she then? (I can't find the entries

In 1871, she was at 8 Gt Smith Street mistranscribed as Howell or Powell I think. In 1881 she is at 15 Henley St with the Timms family.
George's father was also George a labourer, which isn't a great deal of help.
The witnesses were William Thomas Neville & E Shee? (the 2nd was not really clear & they signed with a x)

I did look using FMP's census search for George Brewster & although the one you found is there in 1851 he isn't in 1861, so he could have died hence elizabeth reverting to her original married name in 1871 & 1881.
