This is that family in 1851, at Newby, Cummersdale:
Jane Bell Head Widow 64 Farmer of 60 Acres 1 Labourer Cumbd St Marys Jane Bell Daur U 34 Do Do Robert Bell Son U 32 Do Do Elizabeth Bell Daur U 18 Do Do Wm Armstrong Servant U 50 Farm Servant Do ???? Robert Dalzell GrandSon 9 Do St Mary's Presumably Robert Dalzell belongs to the next household: Hugh Dalzell Head Mar 53 Handloom Weaver Ireland Isabella Dalzell Wife Mar 40 Wife Cumbd St Marys John Dalzell Son 7 At Home Do Do William Dalzell Son 5 At Home Do Do Jane Dalzell Daur 4 At Home Do Do I'm thinking that if we can find baptisms for these people it should give us a better idea of which parish your John and Mary Bell would have been baptised at, and hopefully we will find they are related to these Bells too. |

I like the idea of George as grandfather because my Thomas calls his first son George, for no apparent reason.
I HAVE to go out now, will be back this evening. OC |

My internet went off but it's back now. I couldn't find definite baptisms for Jane Bell's children - there were some possibles for Jane jr, Robert and Elizabeth but the years were slightly out. There is a Hugh Dalzell / Isabella Bell marriage in 1839 but I couldn't see a baptism for Isabella on FamilySearch and the details of the marriage don't seem to be online to get her father's name. I did find a National Probate Calendar entry for Jane Bell sr showing she died 27 Jan 1860 and her executors were: her daughter Jane Bell spinster, Edward Cartner of Keld House, farmer, and William Armstrong of Newby, husbandman. Doesn't really help though.

Thankyou again Kate.
I vaguely remember looking at, I THINK, registers of St Mary Carlisle online and they did have brief detail of location but of course, at that time the locations meant nothing. OC |

Update
For the sake of accuracy I am putting this here. I finally got a copy of Farmer Jane's will. She is not the mother of my Thomas Bell because she names her five children and there is no mention of any Thomas. She was the widow of Richard Bell. There really seems nowhere to go with this. Perhaps my brother's recent foray into DNA testing will throw something up! OC |

I wonder whether there are any plans to put the Cumberland PR's online. That might help.
