Default Family History Photos - Great-Grandmothers

May 2013

Each month we will be asking members to post up family history photographs from a particular category. This month we are looking for photographs of your great-grandmothers (and the great-grandmothers of your partner and any step or adopted great-grandmothers etc!).

Photos posted on this thread will eventually be added to our 'Decades of Family History Photographs' forum in order to help others with dating old photographs. (You are welcome to post any photos you like directly to the Decades forum at any time; these monthly requests are just further encouragement!)

Please note that this thread is on an open forum so any captions to your photos may be picked up by Google searches. If you are lucky you may make a family history contact through your post! I made my best family history contact ever through a photograph caption posted on this site!

There is no restriction to the number of photographs you post each month - the more the merrier! However, please make separate posts if your photos are from different decades. Remember to caption your photograph and if you know the date or approximate date, please state that also. If you are unsure, then that is something we can discuss on the thread.

You will need to use Photobucket or a similar site to host your pictures. If possible please scan your photos at between 300 and 600dpi - if you need help with uploading your images see here:

How to upload images

This thread gives information about scanning your images:

Please make sure you have the permission of any named living people in your photos to post their image.

Default Jessie Lloyd

My paternal grandmother's mother. Taken in 1893 or 1894

Jessie Lloyd 9 April 1873 - 19 May 1948
She married Charles Key in Avenbury, Herefordshire in 1895 and they had 2 sons and a daughter. They emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1911 and homesteaded near Biggar. Their elder son, Sam, died in 1912 aged 16 and their younger son, Ted, was killed in WW1 in 1918 just after his 20th birthday.
Charles & Jessie celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on 21 February 1945.

Ellen Victoria Carsons - nee Phillips - (Nellie) 10 April 1863 - 5 February 1952.
Taken in the 1940s. My maternal grandmother's mother.

She was very deaf in her later years and used a horn ear trumpet. I vividly remember shouting down it when I was a toddler and her telling me not to shout as she wasn't that deaf!

Emma Kilpatrick (nee Gumbert) taken about 1895 in Canada. She was my paternal grandfather's mother.

According to family legend, Emma was adopted by a family of German descent (George & Sophia Gumbert) from Pennsylvania, USA, although they are known to have lived in Ontario, Canada at the time of Emma's marriage in 1884. Emma died in about 1903, aged about 40, shortly after having her 5th child, her only daughter. The family were living in North Dakota, USA, in the 1900 census and moved back to Canada sometime before 1906. We have not been able to find Emma's death or burial or the birth of her daughter Ella.

Isabella 'Bell' McGlary, nee Williamson

Photo taken in 1960 - that's me on her knee!

If you look closely, she is wearing a heart-shaped locket around her neck - a gift to her from my great-grandfather, John McGlary.

When Granny McGlary passed away, she left the locket to my mum. It contained one of the few photos we have of John.
