Is this the same couple? Are they Margaret's parents.

Her second son with Keith Catto was Alexander and the name continued down the line.

I'm trying to remember Scottish naming patterns...

Elizabeth

I'm not sure if we've had this conversation before, but I have Forbes/Catto in my tree (not yours Forbes/Catto though) and the surname Catto is a shortened version of Cattenach/Cattanach.

OC, I remember that so when searching in Scotland I bear it in mind. I still find Scottish research the most difficult. I went about 4/5 years ago with my now son-in-law to "Who do you think you are?" at Olympia and attended the Scotland's People talk. They promised subscriptions, which still haven't materialised. I just can't put any flesh on the bones of many of my Scottish ancestors.

Elizabeth

I found it very easy to do the Scottish BMDs and census, but almost impossible to put any flesh on the bones, as you say.

Not infallible....but frequently followed in my Scots/ Irish families

1st son=father's father
2nd son=mother's father
3rd son=father
4th and successive sons....named for brothers, favourite uncles etc

1st daughter=mother's mother
2nd daughter=father's mother
3rd daughter= mother4th and successive daughters named for aunts etc

If a child died in infancy, often the same name will be reused, which can appear to throw the sequence out. For years, OH's family followed an Archibald/John pattern, with one son per generation. I was looking in quite the wrong direction before I discovered the last known Archibald was actually a second son and I should have been looking for a Peter as his grandfather Archibald was his maternal grandfather's name

Thanks, Bev. So it looks as though Margaret's father was probably Alexander Forbes.

Interestingly there is a PCC 1707 will for an Alexander Forbes at Portsmouth and he has a son Alexander. He is in the Army.
