In 1866 his son Charles James McCarthy was born, but between registering the birth and the next census he changed his name to Carter. Possibly as a result of anti-Irish feeling after a Fenian bomb explosion in Clerkenwell in 1867. 1871 5 Vincent Street, Mile End Old Town James Carter 40 [1831] cooper With wife and children William, Eliza, James, Mary A,. In 1911, James' widow Elizabeth McCarthy is with their married daughter Mary Ann Layton and her husband and family, and Mary Ann registered James' death so it is likely that both parents were living with the Laytons prior to James' death in the infirmary.
