When baby Alice died on 2nd August 1837 (I have the death certificate), aged 8 weeks old, from Diarrhoea, the informant was Alice Porritt Mother Widow

Therefore Samuel Porritt had died before August 1837.

I wonder if he came from Yorkshire. I keep looking at this:

Name: Samuel Porritt
Event Date: 30 Jul 1785
Event Type: Baptism
Parish: Birstall, St Peter
Father's name: Joseph Porritt

My Samuel's daughter, Mary, my 2x-great-grandmother, named her two sons Joseph and Samuel.

Also, the two sons from Samuel Porritt's marriage to Alice were named Joseph and Samuel respectively.

The place of abode on the 1818 baptism is Tinker - maybe Tinker Brook in Oswaldtwistle? I've been looking for Samuel's burial but no luck.

Kate, thanks for looking.

I have Tinker, thanks.

I too wish I could find his burial.
There is a very short time frame. The details for the two dead children show this:

Samuel chr. 30 Jul 1837 Cathedral Manchester
died 13 May 1838 9 Caroline Street Ancoats Decline
Son of Samuel Porritt Deceased Millwright
Informant: Alice Porritt
Alice chr. 30 Jul 1837 Cathedral Manchester
died 2 Aug 1837 Caroline Street Ancoats Diarrhoea
Informant: Alice Porritt Mother Widow

There is no indication that Samuel was dead when the children were christened, but he was definitely dead by 2nd August 1837.

Porritt can have many variations, so perhaps I need to give all those a go, but I always tick the "Variants" box.

I think Samuel moved about for his work, so that is why I wondered about the Yorkshire connection.

I can't find any trace of Alice Porritt the widow of Samuel, nor of Elizabeth, Margaret and Joseph Porritt, her children. They seemed to have disappeared in a puff of smoke!
