Henry Newbourn/Newborne MMMMFFMF
Henry has given me a lot of headaches. His will mentions he has land at Haxey, Lincolnshire, and there are lots of Newbourn families there. I have had lots of help from a couple of people, trawling through the PRs etc. However, we still can't find a sensible baptism or parents for Henry Newbourn. It has been very frustrating.

Henry's parentage and early life are still a mystery to me.
I have been trying to find clues from the documents I have that relate to him. Summary of Will of Henry Newbourn made 1765 He was buried 25th February 1767 at All Saints, Hemswell, Lincolnshire • Newbourn Wood grandson all lands and tenements in the parish of Hemswell • Charlot Wood granddaughter close of meadow or pasture ground in the parish of Haxey know as Cliff Close • Catharine Wood granddaughter rest of lands in the parish of Haxey • if either Charlot or Catharine dies without issue under age of 21 that share to other grandchildren alive • Ann Forman daughter all household goods and silver plate • Ann Wood granddaughter £120 • Sarah Wood granddaughter £100 • Trustees to be Richard Bewley of Kirton Apothecary and Joseph Williamson of Hemswell Farmer • rest of goods, chattels and personal estate to trustees to pay granddaughter Ann Wood £120 and granddaughter Sarah Wood £100 • remainder to be divided between all grandchildren share and share alike • Executors to be Richard Bewley and Joseph Williamson I've tried searching for Richard Bewley, with no success. I've looked at the marriage allegation from 1722 and the other bondsman was William Slater of Beckingham (Nottinghamshire). I can't find anything on him either. Beckingham is due west of Gainsborough. Haxey is to the north and Hemswell is to the east of Gainsborough. Henry was a sailor when he married but eventually settled at Hemswell, his wife's home parish, where he was a farmer. He had lands at Haxey. |

If he got married in 1722, he is unlikely to have been baptised in 1708, Janet.

Ancestry has some references to Richard Bewley as master to apprentices, one in 1752 and one in 1761. Also he (if it is the right person) and his wife Margaret had a son Richard baptised in 1756.
I can't quite figure out whether Richard Bewley, apothecary, could be the same person as the Richard Bewley, Esq / gent who comes up in various pedigrees, documents in TNA's catalogue, etc but you could check into it.

William Slater and his wife Anne had a daughter Anne baptised 1 Sep 1714 at Beckingham.
William Slater of Gringley-on-the-Hill, yeoman, age 22, married Ann Leachman of Beckingham, age 22, in 1708, with bondsman Richard Slater of Gainsborough: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...%2C2137%2C2866

Thanks to you both. I'll check out the Richard Bewley references that you found, Kate.
I was interested in Richard Bewley on the off chance he was somehow related to Henry Newbourn (perhaps a brother-in-law, uncle or the like). |
