This is my father's paternal grandfather, Samuel Charles Burchill, 1855-1921 with his wife and six children. The photo was taken about 1900. Samuel lived in Bristol and was a train driver for the Great Western Railway. It is said he drove the first passenger train through the Severn Tunnel, but I don't know if that's true.

I don't have a photo of my father's maternal grandfather!

Default John Milloy

My great-grandfather, John Milloy, and his wife, Charlotte Nash, taken on their wedding day in Bristol in 1892. It was the only time that John, a Gaelic-speaking crofter, left Scotland. Shame about the poor quality of the photo.

Default Jessie Lloyd

My paternal grandmother's mother. Taken in 1893 or 1894

Jessie Lloyd 9 April 1873 - 19 May 1948
She married Charles Key in Avenbury, Herefordshire in 1895 and they had 2 sons and a daughter. They emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada in 1911 and homesteaded near Biggar. Their elder son, Sam, died in 1912 aged 16 and their younger son, Ted, was killed in WW1 in 1918 just after his 20th birthday.
Charles & Jessie celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary on 21 February 1945.

Emma Kilpatrick (nee Gumbert) taken about 1895 in Canada. She was my paternal grandfather's mother.

According to family legend, Emma was adopted by a family of German descent (George & Sophia Gumbert) from Pennsylvania, USA, although they are known to have lived in Ontario, Canada at the time of Emma's marriage in 1884. Emma died in about 1903, aged about 40, shortly after having her 5th child, her only daughter. The family were living in North Dakota, USA, in the 1900 census and moved back to Canada sometime before 1906. We have not been able to find Emma's death or burial or the birth of her daughter Ella.

This is my father's maternal grandmother, Annie Mitchell, nee Allen. Annie was born in about 1844 (not registered) in Bristol. She was the second wife of stone mason and publican, Edwin Flower Mitchell, who she married in 1879. Her only surviving child was my grandmother, Florence. Annie died in 1926 aged 82.

This photo was taken in the 1890s.

This is my father's paternal grandmother, Johanna Burchill, nee Sage. Johanna was born in 1853 in Chew Magna, Somerset and married Samuel Charles Burchill in 1879. The had six children (pictured), the oldest being my grandfather, George. Johanna died in 1928 aged 74.
