1897 - Thomas Wolstencroft Rathbone with his wife, Elizabeth on the right, and grandaughter Olive.

I do not know who the lady in the left of the photo is, or why part of the photo has been torn off.

They are my "adoptive" family.

This was in a collection of photographs belonging to my maternal grandmother 1880-1973.
No idea if she is on it or maybe her husband my grandfather 1883-1934.

Or is it perhaps earlier than this and an earlier generation?

stanton drew school.jpg

This is one I have of Stanton Drew school Somerset about 1895. The girl on the right with the long hair was my grandmother who was a pupil teacher at the school. This meant that bright girls could stay on past the school leaving age of 14 in exhange for helping teach the little ones. She had the same teacher at the village school for many years and he coached her to take her teaching qualifications and she was able to leave home after her mother's death from cancer when she was 18 to earn her own living.

(click on the photo for a larger version). She is the lady in my profile picture as well.

This is my grandfather's family in 1896. My great greatgrand mother, Sarah Horne nee Knight born 1820 Evesham Worcestershire is in the middle and my great grand parents are either side with most of their eight children and numerous grandchildren. My grandfather is in the second row on the right with a moustache.

This is my grandfather about 1900. Ernest Horne born 1879 Moreton in Marss died 1954 Longwell Green near Bristol

Here's one of my grandfather Walter Berry (left, b1875) with three other young men of about the same age, all from Sutton-in-Craven near Keighley (WRY), apparently enjoying a day in Morecambe. Or perhaps the photographer came through Sutton. The handwritten inscription reads "Walter, Herbert T., Joe H. Craven, H. Cryer. Working from the 1891 census, I believe I've identified Herbert Thompson, Joe H. Craven and Herbert Cryer. Herbert T. was a draper's assistant and the others were all working in the worsted mill and living a stone's throw from each other. My grandfather was married in 1900, so I dare say this photo predates 26 April 1900.
