1. Ruth Common, 6 October 1894, in Bombay. She was his sister's husband's niece.
2. Alice Lowes, 29 June 1938 (he was 73), at the Northumberland Central Register Office.

Occupation(s) - coal miner until he joined the army at age 21
22 years in the Northumberland Fusiliers, rank at discharge was RQMS.

Military service - was posted to India after enlisting in the Northumberland Fusiliers & spent some time on the NW Frontier (modern-day Kashmir region) as well as Singapore. After being posted back to Britain, he had a period stationed at Portland before returning to Newcastle. Stationed on Malta during the Boer War, where he was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal.
Re-enlisted for WWI & for the first year helped train new recruits in Newcastle, before being posted to France in August 1915. Discharged due to ill-health in early 1917 (then aged 52) and granted a Silver War Badge.
Was also awarded the WWI Victory Medal & the 1915 Star.

Funeral details not known, nor do I know where he is buried. Have been told Newbiggin [don't know why there, as it wouldn't have been the nearest] - haven't found his grave. He is not buried with his first wife Ruth, who is buried in Acklington.

After he died, letters of administration were taken out by his widow Alice.
Apparently he was estranged from most of his family after his marriage to Alice, and no-one knows what became of her after George died. My father who was 8 when George remarried, never mentioned Alice at all.
