This is my father's paternal grandfather, Samuel Charles Burchill, 1855-1921 with his wife and six children. The photo was taken about 1900. Samuel lived in Bristol and was a train driver for the Great Western Railway. It is said he drove the first passenger train through the Severn Tunnel, but I don't know if that's true. I don't have a photo of my father's maternal grandfather!

Emma Kilpatrick (nee Gumbert) taken about 1895 in Canada. She was my paternal grandfather's mother.
According to family legend, Emma was adopted by a family of German descent (George & Sophia Gumbert) from Pennsylvania, USA, although they are known to have lived in Ontario, Canada at the time of Emma's marriage in 1884. Emma died in about 1903, aged about 40, shortly after having her 5th child, her only daughter. The family were living in North Dakota, USA, in the 1900 census and moved back to Canada sometime before 1906. We have not been able to find Emma's death or burial or the birth of her daughter Ella.
