There is a Richard Dawson baptism 25 Sep 1785 at Embleton, Cumberland, on FamilySearch with no parents' names given. There are some other Dawsons around then with father William, and a marriage between William Dawson and Mary Morrison 4 Jul 1776 at Aspatria, bride's father Richard Morrison. My Richard named his second son William with the first son being named John; Richard's wife's father's name was John. So it looks promising but I need some proof!

Update - someone on Ancestry has uploaded a photo of the baptism entry from the microfilm at Carlisle Archives, and it says Richard son of William Dawson of Sheaton (presumably Shatton). Not very close to Allonby but the birthplace on the 1851 census is bracketed together with the rest of the family, so could easily be wrong.

But there is also a Richard, son of William, baptised 29 May 1787 at Ulverston, Lancashire, which would account for the not born in county on the 1841 census.
