Default Ancestry ProTools now available in the UK

The "upgrade to Protools" option just appeared for me - £4.99 a month. I got an error message the first time I tried to order it but when I refreshed the page and tried again, it worked. Most of the Protools features are to do with your family tree, but there is a new one they have just added which shows you how much DNA your matches share with each other as well as with you. Should be useful!

You go to Trees and click on "Tree Checker".

Kate, let us know what you think. I might wait a week or two.

The enhanced DNA matching is great.

Not so sure about the tree tools - looking at the "possible duplicates", so far they are mostly cases where a child was given the same name as a child who died young, or siblings who don't even have the same name as each other.

The DNA matching tool sounds really useful. Are you intending to pay for it as a one off single month every now and again?

On the page where it offers you this for £4.99 a month, scrolling down there's a section entitled, "Features for the researcher in you" and there's a note regarding Advanced DNA Tools that says "Separate DNA kit purchase required to access this feature". What does that mean?? (it doesn't have this note for Smart Filters which is also to do with DNA matching).

It just means that if you haven't already taken a DNA test, you would need to take one for this feature to be any use.

I'm going for a month every now and then as I don't think there's much benefit if your results have been up for a while, I only see one or two matches over 20cM each month so it's hard to justify the cost month after month.

One thing that did surprise me is that it applies not just to my own test but also those I manage AND those I have been invited to view as well.

I'm not sure about the tree checker as I can't see how to remove the duplicates, it just seems to put them back in the cycle without reducing the number of them even after confirming they re different people.

Do you think so? MyHeritage has the same feature (at no extra cost), and I haven't found it especially useful so far, because unless the relationship is very close, you still don't know precisely how they're related to each other, just that they're 4th cousins or whatever.

If it included a triangulation feature it'd be a lot more useful.
