Great news for those with ancestors from Newbury or the Newbury area.
Berkshire Family History Society has just published the transcripts of Newbury St Nicolas Parish Registers in CD format. In due course, we will produce Data Downloads of the material and also publish it on Findmypast.
This project has been over four years in the making, partly because some of St Nicolas’ registers are extremely fragile and partly because this is a very large parish. Our journey has included special imaging of some registers, and checking some under ultraviolet light. A huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers who have worked on these registers.
The CD contains a full transcription of the parish register entries and is fully indexed. It also contains a brief history of Newbury. The Coverage is: Baptisms 1538-1910, Banns 1754-1904, Marriages 1538-1917 and Burials 1538-1965. It costs £12 (members of Berkshire Family History Society £10.80) and you can purchase a copy at https://berksfhs.org
Berkshire Family History Society is a registered charity, number 283010.

My great-great-great-grandmother is said to have been born in Newbury from one of her census returns. It would be wonderful to find her in the PRs.

Ooh, thanks Elizabeth!! I have a line of Dibleys that seem to originate in Newbury. Although there are a multitude of trees giving dates etc there are no sources so I've never added any of them.

I wonder how long it will take to get onto FMP? Or should I invest £12? Can I wait?

You are asking the same questions as me, Sue!

I was about to order it after the previous posts but then I remembered that my external cd drive no longer works on my laptop! I've no idea why but I'm glad that I remembered before ordering the cd!

I hope you get some answers, Elizabeth

The CD arrived this morning. It's a massive tome of work - over 11,000 pages.

However, great disappointment, no mention of Martha Franklin and no Franklin baptisms in the relevant period. I'm running out of places to look. In the 1851 Census it states she was born at Newbury. I have also looked over the border in Hampshire, to no avail.
