Default Jane Alderin

Jane married Edward Hughes in 1782. Unfortunately, she could not sign her name.

Here is her marriage, and the witnesses are unhelpful:

I seem to have a seven year gap before the birth of her daughter, Wilhelmina in 1789.

There are very few Alderins in the country, which makes me wonder whether she was an immigrant. Edward was a victualler in Camberwell.

Best guess so far is Sweden. Anyone have helpful ideas?

FamilySearch also comes up with a few Alderins in Germany. Also, the suffix "in" was often added to a woman's surname in Germany, so if she was German, her father's surname could be Alder, and there are quite a few of those in Germany.

I had started to realise that they were all -dotter or -sson in Sweden.

That's really interesting, as the next generation down there's an Eliza Alder.

If it is German Alder-in, then another version would be Aldrin. (Well, also if it's English, I guess.)

Wikipedia says that Hanne is the German equivalent of Jane. But I should think her German name could also be Johanne.

That's really helpful, Kite.

Just noting, for the record, that Eliza, who married Joseph Cheshire, was the daughter of Luke Alder, a dry-salter. His brother was Thomas Alder, esq and they both had stakes in Edenmouth Fishery.
There was also a link with a Gilbert Alder.
