Default Birth certificate question

The name of the mother is in this format: ‘Jane Blogs otherwise Smith’. I don’t think it’s a maiden name. She was likely estranged from her family. Would this formulation be used if someone was just going informally by another name, or had perhaps changed their name by deed poll? It’s a 1960s record. Thanks!

Yes, it just means she was also known by that name.
