Default The leap across the Atlantic!

Looking at many of my DNA matches I'm intrigued to know what resources are available to our American cousins when they arbitrarily state that, for example, William was born in Lancashire in 1747 with an Ancestry source and the next event in William's life is a marriage in 1765 in North Carolina. How can they know that this is the same person? This is just one of many who make the same leap.

Are these researchers making the facts fit their tree or are there records out there that give a place of origin? If there are I may have to think about upgrading to Worldwide Ancestry!

Can you see the trees in enough detail to know whether sources are attached, Sue?

In the example above there's no source for the marriage although there is something labelled as "Family Documentation" which is listed under other sources but not attached to anything. I'll have to try to contact the owner and see what she knows. Other examples are similar - sparsely sourced!

Sometimes there is a record showing place of origin but it may not necessarily be held on ancestry. Records vary a lot between different US states. Or there could be, for instance, a book of someone's research into a family or of local history. Sometimes people have done their own research to come up with it and sometimes they have just copied it from someone else or followed ancestry hints.

Thanks Kite. I'll hold off from upgrading just yet!

I have messaged the owner of this particular tree - she says she likes to help other researchers so shows promise I'm hoping the William above is related to my 5 x gt grandfather whose place of origin is totally unknown.

I also have matches with a lot of US researchers whose trees go back to when their ancestors arrived in America in the 1700s but no clue where they come from and I don't recognise any names! I have no idea where to start with those....

Yes, I have a lot of those matches too, Sue. I have been looking through the trees of people in groups of shared matches to see who their common ancestors are, but some of them seem to have several common ancestors on different branches, so it's pretty confusing.
