Keith Catto MMMMMMF
Name - "official" name and what they were known as
Keith Catto Date and place of birth unknown - Scotland? Names of parents unknown Date and place of baptism unknown Details of hismarriage Margaret Forbes 31st March 1761 at St Mary’s Portsea Children James 10 May 1761 Portsea St Mary Alexander 11 Nov 1764 Gosport Edward 2 Feb 1766 Gosport Jane 4 Jan 1769 Gosport Thomas 20 May 1770 Gosport Betsy 1 Nov 1772 Gosport Mary 26 Dec 1773 Gosport Elizabeth 10 Mar 1776 Gosport Nancy 21 Dec 1777 Gosport Keith 13 Aug 1779 Gosport Occupation(s) Victualler also involved in shipping - a ship owner "Alexander and Jane Catto" Addresses where they lived (including county if in UK) times!). Portsea, Hampshire Gosport, Hampshire I have always thought from his name and his wife's name that they were a Scottish family. Date, place and cause of death January 1801, cause unknown Date and place of burial There is some confusion here! A local researcher gave me this burial date: Burial Date: 20 Jan 1801 Burial Place: Gosport, Hampshire, England However, FMP have the person down as "Katherine Catto". Keith Catto made his will on 16th December 1800, so it looks likely that this is correct. Details of will / administration of their estate Made 16th December 1800 Proved 4th February 1801 Executrix: Jane Smith, his daughter and my MMMMMM Memorial inscription unknown link to Jane Smith (maiden name Catto), my MMMMMM: http://www.genealogistsforum.co.uk/f...ght=Jane+Smith Last edited by ElizabethHerts; 21-12-12 at 12:00. |

FMP has a burial for a Keith Catto in Gosport 16 November 1781. Is this Keith and Margaret's youngest son?
I had a look through some trade directories and found the following: 1791 Gosport James Catto, victualler (Sun) Keith Catto, coal merchant http://search.ancestry.co.uk/browse/...&ln=catto&st=g 1794 Keith Catto, The Sun, North Street, Gosport Victualler, food and drink http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...uidh=fpy&cp=11 |

Quote:
No, it isn't their youngest son, and I have no idea who he is! The youngest son Keith Catto married Maria Jones in 1818 at St Mary's, Portsea and they had 3 children. I also wonder if I might have found a brother for Keith Catto senior: Who is William Cato?? There is a marriage between William Cato and Rebekah Hewlet on 30th Dec 1778 at Portsea St Mary. I haven't found any children for them yet. There are two burials for a William Catto/Kato, and one for Rebecca. I think the later one is for this William. Day: 04 Month: Jan Year: 1798 Surname: Kato Forename: William Age: Parish: Gosport County: Hampshire Day: 21 Month: Feb Year: 1811 Surname: Cato Forename: William Age: 68 Born c. 1743 Parish: Fareham St Peter & St Paul County: Hampshire Day: 15 Month: Jun Year: 1803 Surname: Cato Forename: Rebecca Age: 58 Born c. 1745 Parish: Fareham St Peter & St Paul County: Hampshire So William Catto was born. c. 1745 and I calculated that Keith Catto and his wife Margaret (Forbes) were probably born c. 1740 or earlier. |
