Is 'Burgefs' Burgess written the old-fashioned way? When there was a double s the first one was written like an F.

I have a family called Jessamy which was often written Jefsamy .

I don't know when it changed, but it was shown as Burgefs in 1813 - by the time the children were born it was Burgess 1814 - 20 and thence onwards.

Would you like the thread title changed to Charles Burgess? That other way is just an old way of writing a double s; he didn't actually have an "f" in his name.

I had the same thing with my Burgess in Ireland Jood, and was told that it originated in Germany. Obviously not, it must be Olde English.

This person Charles Burgess has been discussed earlier in this message. I am trying to find out if he was in the 1841 census i.e Charles & Ann Burgess, presumably around London way.

Hopefully they were still alive at the time of the 1841 census. Am guessing their ages to be about 50? Or Robert and Ann who would have been 21 and 24 respectively.

There are a couple of Roberts in Marylebone in 1841 aged 20 but not with parents.

Charles and Ann's wedding actually took place 9th Aug 1813, with witnesses W Gray, William Robinson, and Eleanor Pink. Quite an assortment of colours what with Ann's surname being Brown! The banns were read 27th June and 4th and 11th July.

Charles senior's occupation on Charles jr's baptism is servant. I can't see the other two children's baptisms in the images on ancestry.

There is a Robert Burgess who married Anna Susan Holton (or Helton?) 29 Mar 1851 at St George Bloomsbury, full age, occupation clerk, residence 2 Orange St, father Charles Burgess, butler. Witnesses Sophia Holton and Henry Collins. One of the Roberts I mentioned on the 1841 census was a clerk:
