As it's a monthly subscription it's not a lot of money to attempt to answer a single question.
However if contacting close matches has not proved successful I doubt whether they have close matches with trees who are interested. I found quite a few matches on parent 1 side whose own matches were on parent 2 side. Which is not exactly helpful.

I am in contact with the child of my second cousin who was adopted out. She has any number of matches on her mothers side, so we have that side sorted, but she has very few close matches on her father side, the closest being second cousin 1x removed 180cM. We have tried to contact all of her closest matches but with little success. One woman has given me access to her DNA results, and shee has a tree, but I cannot work it out.
Would Pro tools be useful to try and narrow down where her father might fit into their trees?
It can show you what the likely relationships are between shared matches which can help to figure out common ancestors.

It might help but unless a close match has persuaded their whole family to test you are not that much further forward. Protocols will provide precise relationships like father sister nephew but the matches I examined were either working alone too distant to be of use or already identified without recourse to Protools.

Thanks for that info. There seem to be matches for both sides of her fathers family but most of her paternal matches don't have a tree. The one who has given me access to her results does have both her and her fathers DNA tested, and there is at least one other match with them who has a tree, so maybe that will help to sort out that side.
It is cheap enough, so I will have a go when I have a reasonable amount of time to spend in it, so I can get maximum use for the time available.
I will let you know if I get anywhere!
