Au secours! Help with French, please.
Anyone with Ancestry who can decipher 19th-century French handwriting in a Quebec parish register (link below), if you have a few minutes, please could you give me a second pair of eyes? Top left.
[s/] Moyse Paradis [s/] [Can't make out the name of the priest for the life of me... but not too bothered about that] *P.S. Don't let the year throw you. This priest went on for about three or more pages calling January 1833 "1832". Je vous remercie infiniment. EDIT: I've belatedly deciphered that bit at the end that I've put in purple. Sorry, I don't have Ancestry Worldwide so I can't view this with my UK subscription, Janet.

Thanks, Elizabeth. I didn't know if I'm allowed to post a screenshot. Have to sit down to dinner now but I'll be back!

You could post snips of the particular words that you want help with, Janet, rather than the whole thing.

Thanks, Kite. Let's try this.
I don't think I've misread much of anything else, but if anyone with access to the whole entry has any corrections for me I'll be pleased to hear your thoughts. Thanks! EDIT: That bit that I put in purple in post #1 leads me to think it's: qui a signé avant nous. EDIT AGAIN: avec nous. Last edited by Janet; 22-04-22 at 19:03. |

Janet, I'm afraid I'm not going to be of any help as I really can't read the writing as it is so unclear.

I was afraid it was hopeless, but many thanks for looking, Elizabeth. I'm going to have to trawl through the 1825 Census of Lower Canada and the 1842 Census of Canada East to see if I can find who's in the neighborhood.

Is the name before "son ami" Moyse Paradis?

Ooh, I think you're right. And looking again, I now believe I see Jean-Baptiste somebody and Pierre something.
Can I get away with this much of a snippet? If not, I trust someone will kindly remove it. I have to go now, but I'll be back with another gnarly one. Thanks, Kite. |

You already said Jean-Baptiste and Pierre at the start of the thread, didn't you, Janet?
