Default Struggling with Manchester area!

I just wrote a really long post and then answered most of my own question!

Now I just need to know whether, to a local person, the area called Horwich, to the NW of Manchester, would be classed as Bolton or Manchester or neither in the 1980s?

Officislly Bolton since 1974, but that doesn't really answer your question! Sorry.

Thanks OC, that is useful because back in 1939 there was no Edward Street listed for Horwich, but there was one listed for Bolton, so possibly the same street?

I thought our A-Z of Lancashire would help here, and it has a bit, but not as much as I thought, since it turns out not to include Bolton! Anyway, it does include Horwich, which does have an Edward Street, which is not the same as Edward Street in Bolton.

Here is a bit of Edward Street, Horwich, on the 1939 Register:

Why didn't that page come up for me?! It's a bit odd - the person in the phone book is F McKernan, but around 40 years after this Francis b 1875, was living there. I suppose the person living there in the 1980s was a descendant? The person it's not going to be though, is the person I'm looking for, who was also F (Frank) McKernan, b 1922 in Northern Ireland as Simon Francis McKernan who probably never owned a phone and was possibly homeless or living in hostels in Bolton much of the time. I had hoped he wasn't as badly off as suggested, but it's back to the drawing board for now! Thank you both for your help.

I see Francis b 1875 had a son Francis b 1908 so it may be him in the phone book, or, like my own family, they may have left the phone book entry with the name of a dec'd family member because they could!
