Some more about Samuel L Hirst

Professional, Commercial and Industrial.

Hirst, Samuel Luther, General Agent, Te Aroha. Mr. Hirst was born in Lancashire, England, in 1851, and when he was five years of age he accompanied his parents to Auckland by the ship “William Watson.” In 1872, Mr. Hirst settled at the Thames, and engaged in battery work as an amalgamist. Up till 1888 he was employed at the Victoria and Moanataiari batteries, and left the Thames to take charge of the Martha battery at Waihi. Six months later he removed to Waiorongomai to take charge, as amalgamator, of Messrs Firth and Clark's battery. Three years later he opened business in Te Aroha as a cordial manufacturer, and subsequently sold out and took up the agency of the Northern Steamship Company, for which he still acts. Mr. Hirst is agent at Te Aroha for the National Insurance Company and New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, and undertakes general agency work. He holds a farm of 200 acres at Manawaru, where he keeps cattle and sheep. In the days of the Te Aroha Town Board, Mr. Hirst was at one time chairman, and was for a long time a member of that body. He is a Freemason, and is attached to the local lodge. He was for seven years a member of the Thames Navals, under Captain Wildman. Mr. Hirst was married, in 1874, to a daughter of the late Mr. James Gribble, of Hamilton, and has four sons and four daughters.

He was also a member of the Te Aroha Agricultural and Horticultural Society and the Te Aroha Musical Society.

Hi girls .. My bil is very happy and amazed with you have found. He has wanted a lead for a long time. He said he now needs to put it in context with what information he has on his family in Australia. My sister thinks that it is all fascinating.. Many many thanks... I now need to recover from going to bed at 3.30 am this morning .... Probably would have still been there, only my sister came to turn the light off thinking I had forgotten to turn it off .. I felt like a little girl being roused on .. lol

I am trying to find out more about Samuel and Susanna Hirst the following is a summary of what has been found:

1841 census records of Padiham - All born in county:
Samuel Hirst, 35, warper
Susanna Hirst, 35
Henry Hirst, 15
Ann Hirst, 10
Agnes Hirst, 7
Mary Hirst, 4
Margaret Hirst, 5 months.

Samuel Hirst m Susanna Webster in 1822 at Padiham.

Henry Hirst m Elizabeth Dodgeon in 1850 at Padiham.

Henry and Elizabeth were found in the 1851 census at Padiham and they had migrated to New Zealand before 1861.

In Henry's obituary he said that his parents were strict lay Methodists and Recabites.

I tried finding them on Freecen in 1851 but I can't find them..

I am wondering if they would have stayed in Padiham or moved as missioners. I thought I saw a document where Henry was referred to as a son of the late Mr. S. Hirst, but not sure where I saw that. Julie

If you look at the coverage info on FreeCEN you will see that they have not done any of the Lancashire 1851 census yet.
