There were quite a few pubs/inns called Elephant and Castle (Holborn, St Pancras, Camden, Moorgate), but only the one south of the Thames.

Thanks Kate - I'll pencil that in. I can't see another likely marriage and there are other marriages in Putney within that family so it does seem very plausible!

Thanks for all the info on Elaphant and Castle, Shona.
I wonder if there's any record of who had the 1816 version built? In 1848 Elizabeth Cullimore left her "interest in the public house known as Elephant and Castle" to her nephew. Her husband was landlord there in 1794 but whether he was owner/part owner or leaseholder I don't know. I should probably have started another thread with this .....
