son of Abraham Mealing and Mary, nee Sadler. John married Mary Wells 06 Aug 1834, Barnsley, Gloucestershire 1841 HO 107/ 363 16 John Mealing 33 ag lab Mary Mealing 28, wife, William Mealing 6, Ann Mealing 4, Charles Mealing 2 [Mary and the children are also enumerated in Barnsley with her parents William and Sarah Wells] 1851 HO 107/ 1968 / 104 p.12 John Mealing, Mary Mealing, William,16, Ann 14, Charles 12, Sarah Ann 9, James 6, Stephen 4, Emma 2 1861 RG9/1781/ 79 pp.2 & 3 Recorded on census as Melins John 56, Mary 49, James 17, Stephen 14,[all ag labs] Emma 12, Richard 8 1862 John's son William was tried for murder, found innocent on the grounds of insanity and sent to Broadmoor. 1871 RG10/ 2645 18 p 7 John 65, Mary 59, Richard 17 all ag labs. [average weekly agricultural wage 1872 Gloucestershire 14s] 1881 RG11/ 2553/ 73 p.3 John 75, Mary 69, plus two people whose relationship is unknown, but who appear to be lodgers: Joyce Taylor, 66, widow, no occupation, born Combend - further up on same page are another Taylor family, and Elizabeth Griffin 72 b. Gloucester, also no occupation. death: Mealins,[sic] John Age at death: 79 12 August 1884 Cirencester U.S.D. Agricultural labourer of Rendcombe. Committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor - lived 20 days. Certificate received from A.J. Morton Bell, coroner for Gloucestershire. Inquest held 13th August 1884. Found a newspaper account that says poor John was nursed at home by his daughter [Sarah] Ann Morgan, but removed against his and his relatives' wishes to the Workhouse where he died.
