Merry owns the only crystal ball on here. If she can't see them then what chance do the rest of us have.

LOL *puts on gipsy fortune teller outfit*
We have a three inch thick pile of letters written by JC Hamilton circa 1916-18 to his girlfriend who he later married. As far as I know there is only one letter mentioning his parents (where he slags them off, says he will never have contact with them in any shape or form ever again etc etc), but as it's probably 10 years since I've looked at the letters, I think they might be worth another look!

Oh, probably not the same family - those Cole-Hamiltons are on the Peerage site, and the son was Commander John Claud Cole-Hamilton (b. 24 March 1879, d. 23 May 1951), who married Evelyn Wolston.
I guess you'd already found that and the details don't match, which is why you think it's an assumed name? |

I had seen that first one, Mary - not sure about the second. I don't think he would have passed for 24 (when he married) if he was actually 41 or so, unfortunately.
He actually never used the Claud bit of his name - that only appears in the places other people were giving his details - his daughter's birth cert and his death cert. When he married he just said 'John'. However, his wife was definitely not the type to go about making things up or getting above herself or whatever, so if she registered an event and gave his name as John Claud then that was because she believed that was his name. I always imagined his father was going to turn out to be Claud Hamilton and that was why John dropped that bit of his name (as they seem to have disowned each other). I only read two of his letters this afternoon. The next one is 18 pages! They are all a bit depressing. He seems to have a very 'glass is half empty' sort of character - and very difficult to read handwriting, even if it looks very need from a distance!

Oh, sorry - for some reason I'd put down 1879 as his birthdate instead of 1895 (* slaps self *).
