Default Gretna Green Marriage from 1820

Hi,
I found the marriage of my great x 4 grandparents, David Adams & Elizabeth Cole, a while ago now on Ancestry's Gretna Green marriages. It took place on the 21st September 1820.

I have tried and failed to work out what the name of the parish is that David gives. It looks like Busing but I cant find any reference to this when I google.

On the 51 census, he states he was born in Glasgow. On the 61 census, he just said Scotland.

I would really like to try and find a baptism for David (he was born aprox 1776c and his father was also called David).

Is there anyone with any Scottish expertise that could take a look at the image and offer some advise on what it says and where it might be?

Many thanks in advance
Claire

Certainly looks like Busing. But it could be an e not an i because all the other i's are dotted. The last 2 letters are definitely not an r or a y, judging by other words.

I wonder about Bursing/Burning - but did note that there isn't a county given - do you think that it's because they're both from Northumberland or that David is local.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I did note that a county wasnt given for David; however, I do think he was from Scotland as stated this on the 41, 51, 61 census. Just the 51 had Glasgow stated.

The parish on the marriage entry is the parish where he (said he) was living at the time of the marriage, not necessarily where he was born. I would think that either his parish of residence was also in Northumberland, or it was in the same county as Gretna Green.

There's a place called Beeswing, a few miles south-east of Dumfries. I think his parish must be in Dumfriesshire or it would have said otherwise.

I see that David and Elizabeth's son David was baptised at a non-conformist church (Wesleyan), so could it be that David himself was also baptised as a non-conformist? I don't think all the Scottish non-conformist records are online yet.

ooh, never heard of Beeswing, certainly worth looking at.

I hadnt thought about David senior being non-conformist but might explain the Gretna Green marriage. When he remarried in Liverpool, he married in a CofE church. I think out of the four children I know of, 2 were baptised Weslyan.

Think I have just found Elizabeth Cole's baptism and it looks like she might be the non-conformist:

http://pilot.familysearch.org/record...n=fs%3A1473014

I dont quite understand what this means, does it mean she was an orphan, or the place of baptism was formerly an orphanage?

Christopher & Margaret Cole are given as the maternal grandparent names on David Adams (1823) baptism at the Wesleyan chapel in Bradford.
