If only the name was less common! I did look on the censuses for any John Stephenson or Stevenson with occupation soldier, and looked on TNA to see if his army record was listed, but no luck. I suppose you could look through the National Probate Calendar at all the John Stephenson / Stevenson entries to see if there is a soldier listed, or an entry with a name that you recognise as executor, but of course he may not have been deceased by 1912 as it is quite common for "illegitimate" children to put their father down as deceased when he isn't. Still, you could have a go at looking through from 1886 or 1888 to 1912 to start with.
