I once went for a curry in Porthcawl!

I have all the letters my maternal grandfather wrote to my grandmother in WW1. She was working as a maid and another maid who was writing to her fiance, mentioned that the fiance's cousin never had any letters. So Grandad and Grannie became penpals. He starts writing to "Miss Smoothy" and then "Dear Gladys" and eventually "My own darling". He came over on leave and was unable to see either Gladys or his elder sister as they were both suffering from flu.

My grandparents eventually married in 1923 in Hythe, Kent. Sadly my grandmother's letters don't survive.
