Me too. She didn't seem to realise that by forging David Husband's signature, he was setting him up to be responsible for repaying the £50! What choice did David have other than reporting him? Otherwise he (David) could himself have been sent to a debtors' prison, assuming he didn't have £50 to spare.
Interesting info that you posted about the parish. I see that the parents had to pay school fees, so they should certainly have been able to expect a decent standard of teaching.
