Mary, is her father definitely John? (from marriage certificate?)

ElizabethHerts 26-02-10 17:26

There is this family on the 1841 census in Manchester, but it looks as though the adults are the grandparents:

John SCHOFIELD M 65 1776 Lancashire
Ann F 55 1786 Lancashire
Charlotte F 25 1816 Lancashire
Alice F 15 1826 Lancashire
Mary Ann F 7 1834 Lancashire
Sarah F 5 1836 Lancashire
Eliza F 4 1837 Lancashire

RG number: HO107 Piece: 572 Book/Folio: 12/23 Page: 40

They live at China Lane.

Yes, it's John Schofield, spinner on the marriage cert.

I'm not 100% sure that I have the right baptism, but the details fit. Someone from FTF kindly looked it up for me in the PRs; the address given is Fleet St., Manchester, and the father's occupation is spinner. However, Schofield is a very common name in Lancs, and spinner is a pretty common occupation.

It looks as though John died before 1851. These are the censuses I have:

1851: Jane (widow) and Mary Ann are living in Myrtle St., Hulme. Jane's a charwoman and Mary Ann's a servant.
HO107; Piece: 2221; Folio: 923; Page: 15

1861: Mary Ann is now married to William Grimshaw, and they're living in Hulme with their 5 children, Mary Ann's mother Jane Schofield, and a mysterious uncle, John Hindle. I was hoping he'd turn out to be Jane's brother, but I can't find a Jane Hindle/John Schofield marriage. Hindle and Grimshaw are also very common Lancs names; he may have married one of William's father's sisters, but I haven't found a marriage so far.

1871: Mary Ann had died; William had remarried:
Class: RG10; Piece: 4459; Folio: 26; Page: 3
and I think this may be Jane, although the family she's visiting doesn't ring any bells:
Class: RG10; Piece: 3991; Folio: 62; Page: 51

I haven't found a death for Jane; there are just too many Jane Schofields in Lancs.

I've just found this one on the 1841 census which looks more promising:

John Schofield M 50 1791 Lancashire
Jane F 40 1801 Lancashire
Ann F 20 1821 Lancashire
Martha F 10 1831 Lancashire
Mary F 7 1834 Lancashire
John Holt M 30 1811 Lancashire
Margt Holt F 30 1811 Lancashire
Mary Handford F 70 1771 Lancashire
Elizabeth Handford F 40 1801 Lancashire

RG number: HO107 Piece: 570 Book/Folio: 15/10 Page: 15

Ooh! I missed that one! Off to look...

ElizabethHerts 26-02-10 18:25

I'm not sure about this, but it's worth a look:

John Schofield married Jane Clayton
Manchester Cathedral
3 Feb 1827
(IGI)

See 1841 census entry I gave in previous post:

Martha Clayton or Schofield
baptised 1 Jul 1825
Manchester Cathedral
Parents: John Schofield and Jane Clayton

Brilliant, I do believe you've cracked it - that John's a spinner, too.

I've been looking for these guys for years!

It took me ages to find, even with the reference you gave - Ancestry has them transcribed as Schafred. I'd tried a load of wildcard searches in the past, but evidently not the right one.

I hadn't found any siblings for Mary Ann, either, so the ones you've found may lead to more information

Thanks very much :) :)

Mary from Italy 26-02-10 18:26

Ah, that marriage looks good, too.

It was one of the many possibilities I'd found, but with not having the siblings' names, I had no idea if it was the right one.

I owe you one :)

ElizabethHerts 26-02-10 18:26

:)I'm using FMP.

I hope you have seen my next post!
