When baby Alice died on 2nd August 1837 (I have the death certificate), aged 8 weeks old, from Diarrhoea, the informant was Alice Porritt Mother Widow
Therefore Samuel Porritt had died before August 1837. |
I wonder if he came from Yorkshire. I keep looking at this:
Name: Samuel Porritt Event Date: 30 Jul 1785 Event Type: Baptism Parish: Birstall, St Peter Father's name: Joseph Porritt http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin...iv=1&ml_rpos=6 My Samuel's daughter, Mary, my 2x-great-grandmother, named her two sons Joseph and Samuel. |
Also, the two sons from Samuel Porritt's marriage to Alice were named Joseph and Samuel respectively.
|
The place of abode on the 1818 baptism is Tinker - maybe Tinker Brook in Oswaldtwistle? I've been looking for Samuel's burial but no luck.
|
Kate, thanks for looking.
I have Tinker, thanks. I too wish I could find his burial. There is a very short time frame. The details for the two dead children show this: Samuel chr. 30 Jul 1837 Cathedral Manchester died 13 May 1838 9 Caroline Street Ancoats Decline Son of Samuel Porritt Deceased Millwright Informant: Alice Porritt Alice chr. 30 Jul 1837 Cathedral Manchester died 2 Aug 1837 Caroline Street Ancoats Diarrhoea Informant: Alice Porritt Mother Widow There is no indication that Samuel was dead when the children were christened, but he was definitely dead by 2nd August 1837. |
Porritt can have many variations, so perhaps I need to give all those a go, but I always tick the "Variants" box.
|
I think Samuel moved about for his work, so that is why I wondered about the Yorkshire connection.
|
I can't find any trace of Alice Porritt the widow of Samuel, nor of Elizabeth, Margaret and Joseph Porritt, her children. They seemed to have disappeared in a puff of smoke!

Margaret is down as Parrott on the 1851 census but not with her family, and her birthplace is given as Preston:
http://interactive.ancestry.co.uk/88...nSearchResults |
Thanks for that, Kate. She's probably not the right one if she was born in Preston.
I've e-mailed Bury Archives as they have lots on a Porritt family, although I can't see any connection. My Mary Porritt married Charles Alexander at St Mary's, Bury, in 1850. http://archives.bury.gov.uk/dserve.e...g&dsqKey=RefNo |
I never found Mary Porritt (my 2x-great-grandmother) in the 1841 Census.
Perhaps it's time I looked again. |
This could be the same Margaret in 1871 and her birthplace is now Manchester:
1871 census on ancestry 52 Egan St, Preston Joseph Tipping Head Mar 35 Plasterer Lancashire Goosnargh Elizabeth Do Wife Do 35 Do Hindley John Do Son 10 Scholar Do Wigan James Do Do 7 Do Do Preston Margaret Wilson Lodger Widow 38 Cotton Weaver Do Manchester Alice Do Daur Unm 18 Do Do Do Preston Catherine Do " 9 Scholar Gibralter Catherine's birthplace would explain why I can't find the Wilsons in 1861! Alice Wilson, age 19, weaver, daughter of late Samuel Wilson, spinner, marries a William Sumner 5 Oct 1872 in Preston, according to Lancashire OPC, so it looks like the right family. |
In 1881 Catherine is a lodger with a family called Plumb:
1881 census on ancestry and these are the Sumners: 1881 census on ancestry There is a Margaret Wilson, 48, widow, born Manchester, in prison in Clerkenwell, London, but her occupation is domestic servant (cook): 1881 census |
Thanks, Kate. I will have to check this out later.

Ancestry's suggestion for Elizabeth born 1831 is a marriage to James Southworth. Lancs BMD has this as James Southworth / Elizabeth Porrit in 1850, Preston Register Office or Registrar Attended. This looks like the couple in 1851 and Elizabeth is the right age (19) but her birthplace is given as Walton le Dale:
1851 census on ancestry The birthplace on that census was dittoed and she is listed in amongst James' family so the birthplace on the 1861 census is more likely to be right and it is Manchester: 1861 census on ancestry 274 North Rd, Preston, Lancashire (Three Tuns) James Southworth Head Mar 31 Inn Keeper Lancashire Walton le Dale Elizabeth Do Wife Mar 30 House Keeper Do Manchester Ralph Do Son 8 Scholar Do Preston John Do Son 6 Do Do Do Ralph's birth on Lancs BMD shows MMN as Porritt to confirm this is the right couple. In 1871 James and Elizabeth also have a daughter Margaret, 9, and sons Samuel, 7, and Peter, 4. 1871 census Lancs BMD has an Alice Southworth, MMN Porritt, born 1856 Preston, and an Alice Southworth death in 1858 in Preston, age 2. So I would reckon this is the right Elizabeth as it means she named a daughter after her mother. |
Thanks, Kate. I was at my daughter's when you posted this and we now have our grandson until the weekend, so I haven't been able to look at this properly.

I have been researching more and have found First name(s) William Last name Brown Sex Male Marital status Married Marriage year 1839 Marriage date 15 Jun 1839 Marriage place Glossop, Glossop, Derbyshire, England Father's first name(s) Richard Father's last name Brown Spouse's first name(s) Alice Spouse's last name Porritt Spouse's sex Female Spouse's marital status Widowed Spouse's father's first name(s) Ralf Spouse's father's last name Ellison Place Glossop County Derbyshire Country England Record set Derbyshire Marriage Index 1538-1910 This has found two further sons for Alice - James and Richard. Also the family moved to Preston after living at Waterside, Derbyshire, for a while. So the family were close together. I have found so much more, but not what happened to Ann Porritt and Joseph Parrott. I still haven't found a burial for Samuel Porritt senior or his baptism. |
Lancashire OPC has a marriage 10 Mar 1856 at Immanuel, Oswaldtwistle: John Clayton, full age, labourer, widower, abode Church Bridge, son of John Clayton, deceased, weaver, and Ann Porritt, full age, spinster, abode Church Bridge, daughter of Samuel Porritt, deceased, weaver. Witnesses John Gaskell and Mary Rothwell.

Ooh, thanks Kate. I have been concentrating on Alice for my new contact, so I hadn't looked any further.
|
Ann was in her late 30s when she married and her sister Mary (my 2x-great-grandmother) had already died.
|
My memory must have gone because Ann's records have already been saved to the Ancestry tree! My daughter might have put them on there.
