Elizabeth Cannon formerly Pridden nee Mearns
I cannot find Elizabeth's baptism, circa 1789, possibly Islington, as this is what she said when she was living with her widowed sister in 1851 in 25 Jefferys St Kentish Town:
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...020?pId=140578 Hester was a witness to her marriage to Humphrey Gregory Pridden: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...94?pId=4221112 They married in her parish of St Mary Newington in 1810, but HGP was of St Andrews Holborn. Both literate. She had three sons: John b 1811 Leather Lane, Holborn Joseph Thomas b 1816 City of London Lying in Hospital and Humphrey Gregory Pridden junior b 1818 Islington Her husband HGP died following a drunken argument in the same year. She then married the elusive Wiliam Cannon (who appears to have been a spirits merchant in Oxford Street) on 8 March 1818 in St Andrews Holborn. I don't recognise the witnesses. They had two girls that I know of: Ann Pridden Cannon b 1820 Elizabeth Pridden Cannon b 1822 Both girls were baptised in St Andrews Holborn in 1832 when the family were living in Camden Town. William's profession was given as confectioner. (He may, of course long been dead by this stage) The girls of course had no right to the surname Pridden, but this may have been to establish Elizabeth and her sons' entitlement to any Pridden money going. In 1841, Elizabeth is living as a governess with her daughter Elizabeth in Temple Street Bethnal Green: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...11?pId=7629984 Her sister Hester had married Peter Dantan after banns 6 January 1817 in St Mary Islington and HGP was a witness: https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...53?pId=4203828 Can anyone find baptisms for Elizabeth and (I am presuming!) sister Hester? Can anyone find a death and/or burial for Elizabeth? Her sons, like her first husband, were a sad disappointment to her and HGP junior had fled to Bradford, abandoning his wife, by ths stage. |
I did wonder whether these were her parents:

Okay, baptism only needed. She made a will!
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/imageview...rue&pId=689804 I note that she makes absolutely no mention of her two younger sons, unsurprisingly. |
Mearns, the bane of my life for years. It's a Scottish name as I'm sure you know. My grandmother's middle name. I had to go back seven generations before I found the connection.

Lol! Not until I checked with Deceased Online. Then I wondered why everyone died in Aberdeen or Angus.

No luck with Elizabeth or Hester, but there are these baptisms of children of Thomas and Esther Mearns:
Thomas Tobias Mearns baptised 23 Sep 1792 St Andrew, Holborn Thomas Tobias Mearns baptised 23 Nov 1794 St Andrew, Holborn Sarah Hill Mearns born 3 Aug 1797, baptised 4 Feb 1812 St Andrew, Holborn |
I do feel (though I would like proof!!) that those may be her parents, especially since they are living in the right neck of the woods, and Sarah presumably was only baptised to satisfy an employer.
Like everyone else, they promptly hide themselves. |
Another sibling?
Mary Mearns Christening (Baptism) 22 May 1797 St Andrew, Holborn, Camden, London Thomas, Easter There's a marriage in 1825 to Samuel Adams with a witness, X Sarah Mearns. Sarah Hill Mearns m in 1838 and her father, Thomas was recorded as a dec'd comb maker. |
Ooh, I missed that, Merry! Thank you! Another rabbit hole to dive down.

Brown???!
How dare Sarah marry a Brown. I may be some time. |
